About Us Light & Life is a multi-ethnic community of imperfect people learning to love Jesus, each other, and our world.
We love Jesus by celebrating Him, studying His Word, seeking Him in prayer, and serving others in our world.
Our doors are open to everyone. We love people just like they are and we love them enough to help them become who God designed them to be. We work hard to live up to our motto – “The People-Loving Place”.
Authentic, alive, vibrant, caring, spiritual, missional, externally focused, trust-worthy and creative are words that people use to describe us.
Reach, Teach, Mend, Send – this is our mission at Light & Life.

Light & Life church was founded in 1954 from a Bible study in Long Beach. Property was purchased in 1957 at 5951 Downey Avenue. First services were held in a yellow school bus. A one room building was constructed in 1957 and both school and worship services were held there. The church averaged between 35 and 100 people over the next 35 years. During that time a 200 seat sanctuary was built and the school was expanded. In 1991 God called Larry & Deb Walkemeyer to pastor a group of 80 anglo Christians who were ready to do something great for God. With changes in worship music under Craig and Mary Durst leadership and changes in many areas of ministry the church began to grow rapidly. Walls were knocked out to accomodate the growing numbers. One of passions was to become a multi-ethnic church. At worship services now over 20 different language groups are present. In 1999 God called Light & Life to be a "River Church"...rather than relocating into larger facilities we were to stay put and plant churches. In 1999 our first church was planted. Since then many churches have been planted. At the same time we began working in Ethiopia. In 2006 we purchased a building for a Community Center as God called us to prioritize the poor as we continued to planting churches. At LLCF we believe the best years are just ahead. We have received awards from the City of Long Beach for helping change one of the most violent streets in the city.
Light & Life has grown to 800 in attendance, as well as planted multiple churches locally, nationally and globally. |

These are the most important truths that we believe at LLCF: WE BELIEVE in one God, who is eternal, all-powerful, and absolutely Holy; who has revealed Himself to man as existing in three distinguishable expressions of His essential being: The Father, Jesus Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; and John 14:15-17). WE BELIEVE that the Bible, composed of the Old and New Testaments (the accepted canon of Holy Scripture) is God’s eternal, inspired, infallible Word in its entirety; and is the supreme standard and final authority for all conduct, faith, and doctrine. (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 1 Corinthians 2:13; 2 Peter 1:19-21). WE BELIEVE in the creation, test and fall of man as recorded in Genesis; and man’s total spiritual depravity and inability to attain to divine righteousness. (Romans 5:12,18; 8:1-9; 6:23; 3:23; 7:18, 21-25). WE BELIEVE in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Savior of humankind, conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, very God and very man. (Luke 1:26-35; John 1:18; Isaiah 7:14). WE BELIEVE Christ died for our sins, was buried and rose again the third day, and personally appeared to His disciples. (1 Corinthians 15:1-8, 17; Romans 4:25). WE BELIEVE in the bodily ascension of Jesus to heaven, and His exaltation as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. (John 14:1-3; Philippians 2:9-11; Revelation 17:14; 19:11-17). WE BELIEVE in Christ’s personal, literal return (second coming) for the church. (1 Timothy 6:14-16; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Matthew 24:30-31, 42, 44). WE BELIEVE in the salvation of sinners by grace, through repentance and faith in the perfect and sufficient work of the cross of Calvary by which we obtain remission of sins. (Ephesians 2:8-9; Hebrews 9:12-15; Romans 5:11). WE BELIEVE in the sacrament of water baptism in the name of the Eternal Godhead in order to fulfill the command of Christ. (Matthew 28:19; Acts 2:34-36; 19:1-6). WE BELIEVE in the operation of the gifts of the Spirit, as manifested in the Early Church. (1 Corinthians 12-14) WE BELIEVE in the Spirit-filled life, a life of separation from the world and perfecting of holiness in the fear of God as an expression of Christian faith. (Ephesians 5:18; 2 Corinthians 6:14; 7:1). WE BELIEVE in the table of the Lord, commonly called Communion or the Lord’s Supper, for believers as a memorial celebration of the fellowship of the Body of Christ and our redemption through His Blood. (1 Corinthians 11;28-32). WE BELIEVE in eternal life for believers: a literal heaven, where we will live and reign with Christ and eternal punishment for unbelievers: A literal hell for those who reject Christ. (John 5:24; Mark 9:43-58; 2 Thessalonians 1:9; Revelation 20:10-15). WE BELIEVE in the reality and personality of Satan and eternal judgment of Satan and his angels. (Matthew 25:41; Revelation 20:10-15). |

Jesus said, The Father is seeking those who will worship Him in spirit and in truth" (John 4) Worship is essential to who we are at Light & Life. We worship God as being REAL and PRESENT in our services. We believe God is to be worshipped not only at services but as a 24\7 lifestyle. In our services guests are invited to participate as little or as much as they are comfortable with. Most services include... Celebration worship...loud and enthusiastic! Reflective worship...quiet and intimate. Communion...remembering the cross as central to why we gather. Public Prayer...interceding together as a family of believers. Healing Prayer...praying for individual needs and believing for miracles. Preaching of God's Word...with an emphasis on the text and its application to our lives today. Giving...worshipping God with our finances to spread his kingdom. Family Time...announcing what is happening in the church throughout the coming week. Artistic expressions in worship such as drama, video clips, paintings, poetry, spoken word, dance, and others are given a special place in our services. Our worship style is Jazz\Gospel\Rock fusion. Led by professional musicians Craig and Mary Durst who are well known through out the LA area. Craig and Mary have been leading worship for the past 20 years with a powerful anointing. Our multi-ethnic Gospel Choir ministers monthly and leads us in worship under the anointed Tai Ciago's leadership. |
